When you have 3 Shards of Domination of the same type socketed and are wearing the appropriate set-bonus gear piece assigned to that bonus (Helm for Unholy, Shoulders for Frost, and Chest for Blood) then you'll activate a special 'Rune Word' set bonus that's only active when in the Maw (including Korthia, Torghast, and Sanctum of Domination) via Runic Dominion. Each type has 3 different Shards for a total of 9 different Shards of Domination and you can only equip one of each Shard.
Shards of Domination come in 3 types: Blood, Frost, and Unholy. It's important to note that Shards of Domination can easily be swapped by using Soulfire Chisel, obtained by spending 2,500 Stygia at Bonesmith Heirmir in Korthia, allowing players to change their Shard of Domination build whenever they want. Two other item slots have Domination Sockets depending on your armor type: All Helms, Shoulders, Chests in Sanctum of Domination have a Domination Socket.
